Australian Medical CV Guide & Template

A professional, well-structured CV is one of the most important tools in your locum career. Here's what Australian employers and recruitment agencies look for.

What Makes a Strong Medical CV?

A clear medical CV should give employers a reliable picture of your qualifications, clinical experience and recent responsibilities. It is not simply a list of positions — it is a professional document that supports credentialing, reference checks and scope-of-practice assessments.

Different employers may have specific requirements, and there is no single mandatory format for every Australian medical position. However, the sections below reflect what most hospitals and recruitment agencies expect to see.

This guide is intended as general career information. It does not constitute professional advice about registration, credentialing or employment law. Always check the specific requirements of each employer and refer to current AHPRA and Medical Board of Australia guidance.

Practical Tips for Your Medical CV

1
Keep it current
Update your CV before each recruitment enquiry, not just when you need it urgently.
2
Be specific about dates
Use month and year for all employment periods. Gaps without explanation can raise questions.
3
Describe your responsibilities
Don't just list job titles. Briefly describe the clinical setting, patient population and your key duties.
4
Choose referees carefully
Select referees who can speak to your recent clinical practice and professional conduct.
5
Check for accuracy
Ensure all registration numbers, qualification dates and employer names are correct before submitting.

How Many References Do You Need?

Reference requirements vary between employers. At AU Locums Direct, we generally request two recent professional references during the initial recruitment process.

Some hospitals may request additional referees or specify particular supervisory relationships. Choose referees who can provide meaningful feedback about your recent clinical practice and professionalism.

Always notify your referees before providing their details and confirm they are willing to provide a reference.
